![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In this important, thoroughly-researched work, McManus uncovers the true nature of fighting-and dying-in the skies over World War II. McManus goes beyond the familiar tales of aerial heroism, capturing the sights and sounds, the toil and fear, the adrenaline and the pain of the American airmen who faced death with every mission. And the aircraft explored are as varied, tough, and legendary as the men who flew them-from the indomitable heavy-duty warhorse that was the B-17 Flying Fortress to the sleek, lethal P-51 Mustang fighter. Their stories span the earth into every corner of the combat theaters in both Europe and the Pacific. This insightful chronicle takes readers inside the experiences of America's fighter pilots and bomber crews, an incredible assortment of men who, in nearly four years of warfare all over the globe, suffered over 120,000 casualties with over 40,000 killed. McManus, author of The Dead and Those About to Die and September Hope, reveals the terror and triumph that shared the fiery skies of World War II-from the first dogfights over Europe to the last Kamikaze attacks over the Pacific. "McManus is a master of the art of oral history and one of the outstanding historians of World War II." -Donald L. ![]() ![]() I’ll admit that the plot did sound intriguing and was the only reason that I decided to give her another chance. I picked this one up even though it’s the longest book I’ve read for ages because I was being cocky. I feel like a failure and I don’t like that it skews my final count. I wanted something that I could definitely finish in time because I hate the idea of carrying a book over. I finished Twleve Nights about 2/3 days before the end of 2020 so I had a bit of a conundrum about what to pick next. ![]() ![]() ![]() At the beginning of the story, there is a lot of plot development. The plot in this book is developed at a good pace, and toys with the reader’s emotions. The novel is an easy read, but the theme, plot, and characters in the book show that it is far beyond “simple teen literature.” ![]() This is the case with Dreamland by Sarah Dessen is found amongst the endless number of shallow teen novels. Neither of these sounds like the kind of book an intellectual would enjoy, so why even bother taking a stroll over to the section in the far left corner? Well, once in awhile one may come across a book with a deep plot, dynamic characters, and an emotion filled theme. To be honest, the majority of the books located there are about teen romance gone astray or (now-a-days) vampires. When browsing through the teen section at Barnes and Noble, it is easy to map out a route, and totally skip the teen section. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bell, (nominated for the Silver Birch, Geoffrey Bilson, Hackmatack and CLA awards), as well as Blood Brothers in Louisbourg, (long-listed for First Nations Communities Read.)
